Violin’s Embrace

May 14 @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm EDT

Virtual Event Virtual Event
CAN $19 – CAN $27

We’re delighted to bring together this stellar quartet of multi-talented, multi-faceted musicians who play across many genres of music.

Join us for this musical meetup with violinist Laura Nerenberg, performing from Ottawa, and guitarist Nathan Hiltz, bassist Duncan Hopkins, and drummer Anthony Michelli, each performing from Toronto. They will perform together for the very first time with a lovely programme of standards, and a few surprises.

You can watch this show live on YouTube or in our amazing virtual venue. Would you like to share this experience with someone you can’t meet up with in person? Perhaps someone far away? Purchase a BRING A FRIEND ticket and sit together in the virtual venue at your own table where you can chat while watching the show together. After the show, join us in the virtual venue to hangout with the band in some wonderfully fun springtime scenes.

If you can’t make the live show, you can watch the recording on YouTube.

About the musicians

Equally at ease with 17th century Italian Violin Sonatas and contemporary music by emerging composers, Laura Nerenberg approaches all performance and recording projects with verve. She has lent her improvisation and leadership skills to the Ottawa Jazz Orchestra and Courage4 and appears on folk albums backing up the likes of Lynn Miles. Laura is a founding member of Gatineau Quebec’s premier chamber group Ensemble Prisme, the Triptych Piano Trio and the unique folk-classical sextet, the Algonquin Ensemble. She has performed extensively in recital with pianist and harpsichordist Thomas Annand, playing repertoire from the early Baroque to today.

Double bassist, composer and arranger Duncan Hopkins has been working at the highest levels of jazz for almost thirty years. In that time he has worked with such luminaries as Norma Winstone, Rob McConnell, Scott Hamilton, Houston Person, Peter Appleyard, Ed Bickert, Mark Murphy, Bobo Stenson, Diana Krall, Sheila Jordan, Kenny Wheeler, Bobby Watson, Sam Rivers, Harry Allen and Edward Simon to name but a few. Duncan was a member of Rob McConnell and the Boss Brass and the highly distinguished Canadian Jazz Quartet for ten years before moving to Europe.

Nathan Hiltz is a jazz guitarist and professor of music at Humber College. He has performed with Alex Pangman, Bernie Senensky, Del Dako,The Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and The Boss Brass. His trio album, ‘Songs Poetic’ (GB RECORDS) features a swinging set of jazz standards from the great American songbook.

Anthony Michelli, the Canadian born and internationally respected professional, has fostered a creative and successful career in the music industry as an accomplished drum set performer, post-secondary educator and sound recording engineer and producer. Anthony has recorded and collaborated with innumerable artists in the contemporary jazz, original composition, world, popular and creative music genres spanning from 1995 to the present day with well over one hundred recordings listed in his discography. As the proprietor of Salem House Studio he is involved in producing, tracking, mixing, editing and mastering full recording projects in addition to drum and percussion tacking for other artists.
